Shady Valley School

Shady Valley School is an elementary school located in Johnson County, Tennessee. The school was built in 1939 under President Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. This program employed millions of unskilled workers to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads.

Shaw & Shanks was hired in 2002 to provide life safety code improvements to prohibit codes officials from closing this historic community school. The original chestnut lined corridor walls and ceiling and many other unique features were maintained while updating the school to meet current life safety and ADA codes. The project also required bats and bat guano to be removed from the existing attic prior to new construction being performed.
